"Careless Whisper" is a song by the English vocalizer George Michael. It was written past Michael and Andrew Ridgeley[4] of Wham! and was released on 24 July 1984 on the Wham! album Brand It Big.

The vocal features a prominent saxophone riff, and has been covered by a number of artists since its first release. Information technology was released every bit a unmarried and became a huge commercial success effectually the world. Information technology reached number i in near 25 countries, selling well-nigh 6 1000000 copies worldwide—two million of them in the Usa.[5]

Background [edit]

Composition and writing [edit]

In 1981, Michael was working every bit a DJ in the Bel Air restaurant near Bushey, Hertfordshire.[vi] Michael explained in his autobiography, Bare, that he conceptualised "Careless Whisper" based on events from his childhood. Michael wrote, "I was on my way to DJ at the Bel Air when I wrote 'Careless Whisper'. I have e'er written on buses, trains and in cars. It e'er happens on journeys... With 'Devil-may-care Whisper' I remember exactly where information technology first came to me, where I came upwards with the sax line... I remember I was handing the money over to the guy on the motorcoach and I got this line, the sax line... I wrote it totally in my head. I worked on it for about three months in my caput."[7]

"When I was twelve, thirteen, I used to have to chaperone my sister, who was two years older, to an ice rink at Queensway in London," he explained. "At that place was a daughter there with long blonde hair whose name was Jane. I was a fat boy in glasses and I had a big crush on her - though I didn't stand a chance. My sister used to go and do what she wanted when we got to the skating rink and I would spend the afternoon swooning over this daughter Jane."[8]

"A few years later, when I was 16, I had my first relationship with a daughter called Helen," Michael connected.

It had simply started to cool off a bit when I discovered that the blonde girl from Queensway had moved in but around the corner from my schoolhouse. She had moved in correct adjacent to where I used to stand and wait for my side by side-door neighbour, who used to give me a lift home from schoolhouse. And one day I saw her walk downwards the path next to me and I thought – now where did SHE come from? She didn't know it was me. It was a few years subsequently and I looked a lot different. Then we played a school disco with The Executive and she saw me singing and decided she fancied me. Past this time she was that much older and a big buxom thing – and eventually I started seeing her. She invited me in ane day when I was waiting for my elevator and I was ... in sky.[8]

Michael observed that after he stopped wearing glasses, he began getting invited to parties. "And the girl who didn't even see me when I was twelve invited me in," he noted.

And so I went out with her for a couple of months simply I didn't stop seeing Helen. I thought I was existence smart – I had gone from being a total loser to being a two-timer. And I remember my sisters used to give me a hard time considering they found out and they really liked the first girl. The whole idea of "Devil-may-care Whisper" was the first girl finding out nigh the second – which she never did. But I started another relationship with a girl called Alexis without finishing the 1 with Jane. It all got a bit complicated. Jane plant out near her and got rid of me ... The whole time I idea I was being cool, being this ii-timer, but there really wasn't that much emotion involved. I did feel guilty nigh the outset girl – and I have seen her since – and the idea of the vocal was nigh her. "Devil-may-care Whisper" was united states dancing, considering nosotros danced a lot, and the thought was – we are dancing ... but she knows ... and it's finished.[8]

Andrew Ridgeley came up with the chord sequence on his Fender Telecaster he had received for his 18th birthday.[9] They continued to work together on the music and lyric both at Michael'due south house in Radlett, and Shirlie Holliman'south aunt'south basement flat in Peckham, where Ridgeley was living.[9] [10]

Demoing [edit]

The original demo was recorded past local music producer Paul Mex, in Jan 1982 aslope those for "Club Tropicana" and "Wham Rap! (Enjoy What You Do)" in the front room of Ridgeley'south home (his parents' lounge turned into a makeshift studio) with Mex's TEAC iv-track Portastudio. Because most of the day was spent on Wham Rap!... and Ridgeley's female parent had returned home by that indicate, Careless Whisper had to be recorded in ane take very quickly. Information technology featured a Doctor Rhythm drum motorcar, an acoustic guitar (played by Ridgeley) and a bass guitar (played by Dave West), with Michael'due south song (recorded with a microphone attached to a broom handle).[11] [12] The overall price of the recording was £xx (largely due to the rental cost of the Portastudio) and the duo landed a deal with Innervision by Marker Dean on the force of the demos.[xiii] [14]

A more consummate and fully realised second demo was recorded on 24 March 1982 at Halligan Band Middle, Holloway, London with a backing ring and a saxophone riff.[15] Notwithstanding, on the aforementioned day, Michael and Ridgely were called over past Dean to sign a contract in addition to the record bargain, which they did at a nearby greasy spoon café. Michael recalls of that day:

"One of the most incredible moments of my life was hearing 'Devil-may-care Whisper' demoed properly, with a band, a sax and everything. It was ironic that nosotros signed the contract with Mark [Dean] that day, the day I finally believed we had number-ane material. That aforementioned day we signed it all away. Just yous can never really know what you are capable of, you lot can never actually accept that foresight."[fifteen]

Production [edit]

The song went through at least two rounds of production. The showtime was during a trip Michael made to Sheffield, Alabama, where he went to work with producer Jerry Wexler at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in 1983.[16] [17] Michael was unhappy with the original version produced by Wexler, and decided to re-tape and produce the song himself; the 2d version was the ane ultimately released as a single.

After the backing track and George's vocal had been recorded, Wexler had booked the top saxophone player from Los Angeles to fly in and practise the solo.[18] "He arrived at eleven and should accept been gone by twelve", recalled Wham! manager Simon Napier-Bell. "Instead, after two hours, he was still at that place while everyone in the studio shuddered with embarrassment. He only couldn't play the opening riff the way George wanted information technology, the way it had been on the demo. But that had been made ii years earlier past a friend of George'southward who lived round the corner and played sax for fun in the pub."[18]

While the saxophonist appeared to be playing the role perfectly, Michael told him, "No, it's nevertheless non right, you see..." and he would lower his head to the talkback microphone and patiently hum the part to him yet over again. "It has to twitch upwards a trivial just there! Encounter...? And not as well much."[18]

Napier-Bong consulted with Wexler over Michael's dispute with the sax sound. "Is in that location really something George wants that's different from what the sax histrion is playing?" Napier-Bell asked.[eighteen] "Definitely!" replied Wexler.

I've seen things like this before. In that location's some tiny dash that the sax player is somehow not getting right. Although you and I tin can't hear what it is, it may be the very matter that will brand the record a striking. The success of pop records is so ephemeral, and then unbelievably unpredictable, nosotros simply tin can't take the risk of being impatient. But this sax role player's not going to get it, is he![18]

The version Wexler produced was released after in the year, every bit a (4:41) B-side "Special Version" on 12" in the UK and Nihon.

The record label Innervision was going to put out the Wexler version of "Careless Whisper" after the Club Fantastic Megamix as early every bit 1983. Song publisher Dick Leahy said that while he could non finish the release of the Guild Fantastic Megamix, he could stop the release of this single on the basis that as a publisher they "have the right to grant the first license of the recording of a melody of which he controls the copyright". He was unable to exercise anything about the Lodge Fantastic Megamix considering it was already released fabric. He said: "Nosotros knew how big that vocal could be, and then information technology was necessary to upset a few people to stop information technology."[19] Towards the end of 1983, Michael was as well committed to touring with Wham! to promote Fantastic, and so co-ordinate to him information technology would not take made sense to release "Careless Whisper" as a solo unmarried in the center of the bout, despite it being role of the setlist.[xx]

Michael later on went back to London'southward Sarm Westward'due south Studio 2 to re-record the track, the backbone of which was done with a live rhythm section in one take, with "loads of stuff bunged on [overdubbed] later" as Michael added, although the feel of it was basically live.[21] [22] Michael elaborated on the song's production and how it turned out in the end:

"Jerry Wexler did one recording of "Careless Whisper" with me. Then we re-mixed that, which meant re-shooting the video so nosotros completely re-did the track about four weeks before information technology was due to exist released. When we originally made information technology I was totally in awe of Jerry Wexler and it was the kickoff time that I had always felt like that well-nigh anybody that I'd worked with. Commonly I have trouble convincing myself that people know what they're doing. In this case I had to become drunk in order to sing, I was so nervous. Anyway, my publisher [Dick Leahy] and I had loads of discussions most whether the record was good enough for the song and whether in that location was enough of me in it considering it just did not sound like me. I said 'information technology's corking. Jerry's done a great chore on it', and for the starting time fourth dimension since we'd started I was blind to what was going on considering the song was already two and a one-half years former and I just did not accept a clue about where else I could take it. Somewhen I merely idea, 'sod this. I'm going to get in and exercise information technology as if it had never been done earlier with the musicians we normally use and meet what happens.' The rail was much better because I was relaxed and I call up that our musicians did a much improve job than the Musculus Shoals department". [22]

According to English jazz musician Dan Forshaw, saxophonist Steve Gregory had received a call to re-record the song's distinctive solo; he was the eleventh saxophone role player to tape the solo, for Michael was adamant to get the sound he wanted.[23] "Session musicians do not take much idea what they are going to be recording until they arrive, and this was the case for Steve and another saxophonist who was ahead of him in the (queue)", Forshaw recalled.

As usual there was a lot of waiting around and the guy in front of Steve threw in the towel saying, 'information technology's but going to be some crappy B side anyway so I'm off'. Steve waited and then discovered that the solo wasn't that easy to play in the written cardinal, as his one-time Selmer Mark Half dozen tenor didn't have a meridian F♯ key. And so, the engineer slowed the tape downwards so that Steve could record the solo a semitone lower than intended. Once the tape was put back to the normal speed, an 'unnatural' saxophone audio was created that sounded a bit like an Alto in the Paul Desmond vibe, but lacking a flake more depth and darkness to the sound. George Michael had simply arrived at the studio and said 'that's the one, that'southward the sax solo I want'. This could be downwards to that whole 80s synth concept where sounds became increasingly 'manufactured', or simply that George never recognized it was 'wrong'.[23]

The officially released single was issued in August 1984, entering the UK Singles Chart at number 12. Inside two weeks information technology was at number one, ending a nine-calendar week run at the top for "Ii Tribes" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood.[iv] Information technology stayed at number i for three weeks, going on to become the fifth best-selling unmarried of 1984 in the United Kingdom; outsold simply by the two Frankie Goes to Hollywood tracks, "Two Tribes" and "Relax", Stevie Wonder with "I Just Called to Say I Love Y'all", and Band Assist's "Do They Know It'due south Christmas?". The song also topped the charts in 25 other countries, including the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States in February 1985 under the credit "Wham! featuring George Michael". Spending three weeks at the top in America, the song was subsequently named Billboard 'due south number-one song of 1985. The song was #i on the smooth radio acme 500 songs of all time nautical chart – proving its iconic condition.

Despite the success, Michael was never addicted of the song. He said in 1991 that it "was non an integral part of my emotional development ... it disappoints me that you tin write a lyric very flippantly—and not a particularly good lyric—and information technology can mean then much to and then many people. That's disillusioning for a writer."[19]

Music video [edit]

The official music video (which uses the shorter single version instead of the full album version and was directed past Duncan Gibbins, who previously directed "Wake Me Upwardly Before You Get-Go") shows the guilt felt by a man (portrayed by Michael) over an affair, and his acknowledgement that his partner (Lisa Stahl) is going to notice out. Madeline Andrews-Hodge plays the woman who lures George away. It was filmed on location in Miami, Florida, in February 1984[24] and features such locales equally Kokosnoot Grove and Watson Island. The terminal office of the video shows Michael leaning out of a top floor balcony of Miami's Grove Towers.[25] [26]

A outset original version of the video was edited with the Jerry Wexler 1983 version, and featured Andrew as a cameo, handing over a letter to a dark-haired George. This version had a more than detailed storyline, but was and then re-edited later.[27]

Co-ordinate to producer Jon Roseman, production of the video was "A fucking disaster".[28] Co-ordinate to Michael's co-star Lisa Stahl, "They lost footage of our kissing scene so nosotros had to reshoot it, which I didn't complain almost ... Then George decided he didn't like his hair so he flew his sister over from England to cutting it and we had to reshoot more scenes."[29]

As the band felt they had "screwed upward" the video, further footage of Michael singing the song onstage was later on shot at the Lyceum Theatre, London.[28] The video operation (1984 Version) was officially uploaded to George Michael YouTube channel on 24 October 2009. It has over 834 million views every bit of 2022.
