Holdrege is a metropolis in Phelps County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 5,495 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Phelps County.[five]

History

Holdrege was established in 1883 when the railroad was extended to that betoken.[six] It was named for George Westward. Holdrege, a railroad official.[7] Holdrege was designated county seat in 1884.[8]

Transportation

Amtrak, the national passenger track system, provides daily service through Holdrege, operating its California Zephyr daily in both directions between Chicago and Emeryville, California, across the bay from San Francisco.

As of the census[2] of 2010, in that location were 5,495 people, 2,351 households, and 1,496 families residing in the city. In the 2002 film About Schmidt, Warren Schmidt (Jack Nicholson) attempts to visit his childhood house in Holdrege only to discover a Tires Plus store congenital on the site. Although set in Holdrege, the scene was actually filmed in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
